Web 2.0 Tool: Jog the Web

Here’s a Jog the Web I created about Jimmy Carter. At the library where I’m employed we get a lot of students and people from the community doing research on Jimmy Carter. According to the Jog the Web website, Jog the Web is a web-based tool that allows anyone to create a synchronous guide to a series of web sites. Its step by step approach of taking viewers through web sites allowing the author to annotate and ask guiding questions for each page is unique.

My Joomla

I started using Joomla this morning and found out that it was harder to use than I had expected. I actually signed up for an account last week. If I received the welcome email, I accidentally deleted it. I signed up again today and the welcome email was in my junk folder. I hate having to watch tutorials or use guides for a program. Once I watched the tutorial for Joomla, I found the site very easy to use. I decided to use my upcoming family reunion as the topic for my Joomla. I probably would not use it in the future but I did enjoy creating my CMS using Joomla.

PBwiki is My Wiki!

I have chosen the James Earl Carter Library at Georgia Southwestern State University as my library for creating a wiki. The Library is committed to supporting the University's mission to cultivate excellence in learning and teaching that encourages intellectual, personal, and social growth for students, faculty, staff, and the community. In keeping with this mission, the Library provides convenient and effective access to quality library services and collections and information in a variety of formats.

Characteristics of the James Earl Carter Library:
1.  Academic library that serves over 3,000 students at Georgia Southwestern State University
2.  Currently employs 3 librarians, 5 staff members, 1 vacant librarian position and about 10 student assistants each semester
3.  Annual Budget of about $671,000
4.  Main goal of the wiki will be staff coordination. The wiki will be used to coordinate schedules for student assistants, publish training materials and policies, and track and launch projects.

Requirements for the Library’s wiki:
1.  Free or very little cost
2.  Easily accessible
3.  Offers professional support
4.  Easy to update and upload media files
5.  Unlimited Storage

By using the Wiki Choice Wizard at WikiMatrix.com I was given 16 wikis that matched my criteria of not having a history page, not caring about WYSIWG, providing professional support, no localization needed, hosted by someone else, and no to corporate branding. Out of the 16 wikis I was familiar with two of them: PBwiki and Wikispaces. After comparing the two, I decided to go with PBwiki.

PBwiki is free, there is no storage restriction, it has the ability to embed videos and file attachments, and it has extras such as blogs, forums, calendar, and image galleries. I have experience creating wikis using PBwiki and it is very easy to use.

Introduction

It seems like I've been using Web 2.0 tools forever (keyword seems)! In the past, I was a technology specialist for a middle school so I taught teachers how to use various software, social media, and other technology in their classrooms. I'm currently the Access Services Supervisor at the GSW library where I use Web 2.0 tools to reach out to the students, faculty, staff and community of GSW. My library mainly uses Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to reach our audience. I have a Masters of Education in Instructional Technology from Georgia Southern University. While obtaining this degree I learned how to use various web 2.0 tools such as social networking sites, blogs, wikis, picture and video sharing sites, etc. I'm very comfortable with using Web 2.0 tools and want to learn how to use them even more in the library field!
